1. Introduction
FYOP (“Find Your Own Party”, “FYOP”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) builds digital tools that help campus communities connect around student-hosted events. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, share, and protect your information when you use our mobile application, website, and related services (collectively, the “Service”). By using FYOP, you consent to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please do not access the Service.
2. Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information:
2.1 Account & Profile Data
Name, pronouns, university email address, alternate contact details, class year, university affiliation, profile photos, biography, interests, social handles (if you add them), and other optional profile elements you share.
2.2 Verification & Trust Data
Documents or metadata submitted during onboarding (such as student IDs, enrollment letters, or affiliation proofs), status of verification checks, reference photos, and signals we generate to assess account integrity and detect fraud.
2.3 Event & Interaction Data
Event listings you create, RSVP decisions, guest lists, attendee notes, custom prompts and responses, announcements, votes, in-app chat messages, event check-ins, feedback, reports, and safety escalations.
2.4 Location & Device Data
With your permission, precise geolocation for discovering nearby events, approximate location derived from IP address, and device identifiers such as hardware model, operating system, app version, language, mobile carrier, and crash diagnostics. You can disable precise location in your device settings, although some features may be limited.
2.5 Usage & Analytics Data
Logs of how you navigate the app, feature usage, buttons tapped, pages viewed, time spent, referral links, marketing attribution data, and cookies or similar technologies on our website.
2.6 Safety & Incident Data
Reports submitted by you or other users, incident descriptions, evidence files (photos, screenshots, videos), disciplinary notes, moderator actions, communications with campus or law-enforcement partners, and outcomes of investigations. We maintain this information to protect the community and to meet legal or campus obligations.
3. How We Use Information
We process your information to:
- Deliver core functionality such as event discovery, RSVPs, chat, and notifications.
- Verify campus affiliation, manage waitlists, prevent duplicate accounts, and uphold eligibility rules.
- Support hosts with tools to manage guests, respond to questions, and share updates.
- Personalize the Service, recommend events, and improve features through analytics and research.
- Maintain trust and safety, including investigating reports, enforcing policies, and mitigating risk.
- Communicate about product changes, safety alerts, promotions, surveys, and support responses.
- Comply with legal obligations, campus requests, and contractual requirements.
- Protect FYOP, our users, and third parties from fraud, abuse, and security threats.
We rely on several lawful bases for processing, including performance of a contract (providing the Service), legitimate interests (safety, improvement, analytics), consent (optional data such as marketing emails or precise location), and compliance with legal duties.
4. How We Share Information
We only share information when necessary to operate the Service, comply with the law, or protect our community:
4.1 With Other Users
Basic profile information (name, photo, university, bio) is visible to verified campus members. Hosts can see RSVP details, prompt responses, and limited profile data for people attending their event. Attendees may see host information, event updates, and other guests if the host enables visibility.
4.2 With Service Providers
We engage vendors who support infrastructure, hosting, analytics, messaging, customer support, payment processing, identity verification, content moderation, and security. These partners process data on our behalf under confidentiality agreements and are limited to using it to perform contracted services.
4.3 With Campus Partners & Safety Authorities
When required or permitted by law, or when we believe it is necessary to address serious risk, we may share information with universities, campus safety offices, housing departments, landlords, emergency responders, or law enforcement. Examples include responding to subpoenas, court orders, or urgent safety situations.
4.4 With Your Consent
We may share information with third parties when you direct us to do so, such as connecting a calendar, ticketing integration, or marketing partner.
4.5 Business Transfers
If FYOP undergoes a merger, acquisition, financing, or asset sale, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to any applicable legal requirements.
5. Cookies & Tracking Technologies
We and our analytics partners use cookies, mobile identifiers, and similar technologies on the website to remember your preferences, measure engagement, and improve marketing. You can adjust browser settings to refuse cookies, though some features may not function correctly. The mobile app may use device identifiers for analytics and push notifications.
6. Data Retention
We retain personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Policy, including providing the Service, supporting trust and safety operations, and meeting legal obligations. Typical retention periods include:
- Account data: Stored while your account is active. When you delete your account, we de-identify or delete most data within 30 days, except where we must retain it for legal, tax, dispute resolution, fraud prevention, or safety investigations.
- Event content: Deleted or anonymized after the event unless needed for ongoing trust and safety review or legal compliance.
- Safety reports: Retained for a minimum of three years to monitor repeat offenses, comply with campus agreements, and cooperate with authorities.
- Technical logs: Stored for up to 18 months for diagnostics and security.
7. Data Security
We implement administrative, technical, and physical safeguards—such as encryption in transit, least-privilege access, and continuous monitoring—to help protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we learn of a data incident that impacts you, we will notify you consistent with applicable law.
8. Your Choices & Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access, correction, deletion, portability, or restriction of your personal information, or to object to certain processing. You can also opt out of marketing communications at any time by using unsubscribe links or your notification settings.
Submit requests to privacy@fyop.app. We will verify your identity before fulfilling requests. If you are a California resident, you may also designate an authorized agent and have the right to receive information about data shared for cross-context behavioral advertising. Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, and European Economic Area residents have additional rights, which we honor as required.
9. Host, Attendee & Liability Notices
Hosts may receive attendee information to manage events, confirm eligibility, handle incidents, or comply with campus directives. Hosts are independent organizers and remain responsible for safeguarding attendee information disclosed to them through FYOP. Hosts agree to use attendee data only for legitimate event purposes, to maintain confidentiality, and to follow all applicable privacy, housing, health, and safety laws. FYOP may suspend or remove hosts who misuse attendee data or fail to honor privacy obligations.
In the event of disputes, injuries, property damage, or other incidents at an event, FYOP may share relevant data with affected parties, insurers, or authorities consistent with our Terms & Conditions to protect the community and FYOP from liability.
10. International Data Transfers
FYOP operates in the United States and may store information on servers located there or in other countries. When we transfer personal data internationally, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses, Data Processing Agreements, or other legally recognized mechanisms.
11. Children's Privacy
FYOP is intended for adults 18+ (or the age of majority where you live). We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we collected information from a minor, we will delete it and may disable the account. Please contact us if you believe a minor is using the Service.
12. Links & Third-Party Services
The Service may include links to third-party websites or integrations. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies. We encourage you to review those policies before providing personal information to third parties.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will revise the “Last updated” date and provide additional notice (such as in-app messaging or email). Your continued use of the Service after the changes take effect signifies your acceptance of the updated policy.
